Amidst the chaos of today’s world, singing with one another will always prove to be the unifying force that brings us hope.

-Hugo Madera

Originally from Jalisco, Mexico, Hugo Madera is a choral composer, conductor, educator and clinician based in Nebraska, United States. He is the director of the choral ensembles at Adams Central High School and First United Methodist Church in Hastings, Nebraska, as well as the Minden Chorale in Minden, Nebraska.

As a composer, Hugo Madera aims to provide a new perspective on Latin-American choral music by creating a bridge between the two cultures, implementing musical elements and styles influenced by a diverse choral background.

He holds Bachelors of Music degrees in Music Education and Vocal Performance from Hastings College, where he studied choral conducting under the direction of Dr. Fritz Mountford, vocal pedagogy under Dr. Hillary Water, and composition under Dr. Marc LaChance and Dr. Kara Baxter. In addition, Hugo Madera is currently a graduate student in Music Education at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

New Canon Project’s I Am Home is now available through Rising Tide Music Press!

A little over a year ago, I was deeply honored to be selected as a composer for the New Canon Project, an initiative made possible by the Sphinx Organization Venture Fund, Rising Tide Music Press, the American String Teachers Association, and the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). The goal? To commission new, accessible music by Black and Latinx composers for developing ensembles. I’m so proud that “I Am Home” was born from this powerful mission and I’m beyond grateful to the people who helped shape it.

Keep a look out for some new voicings of “I Am Home,” as well as some brand new works coming out later this year!
